Stop the Ugly Joint Pain of Arthritis!


Fellow joint pain sufferers-Rejoice! A new "KING" of joint pain supplements has hit the scene like a a "ton of bricks." And before you yawn....let me explain why this is such a big deal. When he said CMO was $100 a bottle all I could do was laugh! I'm thinking....either this stuff is good or it's the biggest con job ever! Well-I chose to go with it and I would say that within 4 days I felt No pain. It worked; I stopped taking it --never took another tablet--not even for maintenance purposes. (Maybe you've heard the saying-"Out Of sight....Out of Mind") That was me then. I felt fine....don't bother me!

The big deal was, I could walk straighter and without the pain....and that meant a lot to me (I liken it to the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy oiled him) For me --mobility is AS big a deal as pain relief itself. I want to be active and "to come and go as I please," So this CMO stuff is making me smile everyday! And pain wise.....

I'm doing well; Not 100% pain free, this time, but a heck-of-a lot better than anything else I've taken lately. And I 'm confident it'll only get better---I'll keep you posted.

The two most common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition that increases in severity as we grow older. The neck is not immune to osteoarthritis. Arthritis neck pain from osteoarthritis can be exquisite pain.

The seven bones of the neck are the cervical vertebrae. There are discs of cartilage between each of these vertebrae. In the event of the vertebral artery being pinched, the blood supply to the brain may be compromised. This artery goes to the area of the brain that controls our balance and consequently dizziness is apt to occur.

Whiplash, which is an injury that usually results from a car accident, can cause severe pain. The head is thrown forward and then backward as the body moves in the opposite direction. While the symptoms and pain of a whiplash usually subside after a few weeks or months, there can also be a chronic condition that remains throughout the patients life. Arthritis neck pain can be one of those conditions. This would be due to the injury causing some degeneration of the vertebrae over time.

Natural Pain Relief - Can it Work For You?


What do you use for pain relief? Most of us reach for a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) like aspirin and Advil or acetaminophen (Tylenol) when in pain.

With over 13 million regular NSAID users in the US and at least 30 billion over-the-counter tablets sold each year, you might say we're "sold" on NSAIDs and acetaminophen for pain relief.

Yet, these drugs aren't as friendly as their advertisements suggest. They help relieve pain, but their side effects can kill!

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that NSAID-induced disease causes at least 103,000 hospitalizations per year and every year 16,500 arthritis patients die from NSAID-related gastrointestinal damage.

These drugs increase the chance of a heart attack and stroke. They cause ulcers and bleeding in the stomach and intestines. Worse yet, these side effects can happen suddenly without warning symptoms and may cause sudden death.

Acetaminophen, another potential killer, likely lurks in your medicine cabinet too. This common over-the-counter (OTC) drug found in Tylenol, cold medicines, and prescription drugs like Vicodin and Percocet is widely used for pain relief and fever.

Though generally considered safe when used according to the directions on its labeling, acetaminophen can cause liver damage and even death according to a FDA 2009 consumer update. Unfortunately, overdosing is easy as many drugs use acetaminophen in combination with other drugs in their formulas.

Fortunately, you can avoid these risks by using simple and effective natural pain relief methods like these:

Ice. Ice is a well-know pain reliever especially in the early phase of injury. "Try to ice the area as soon as possible after the injury and continue to ice it for 10 to 15 minutes four times a day for 48 hours. If you use ice, be careful not to use it too long, as this could cause tissue damage," reports Mayo Clinic staff on their website. After 48 hours, try heat.

Heat. Heat promotes pain relief and it increases blood flow to the area bringing nutrients and specialized cells to speed healing.

Fish Oil. An April 2006 study in Surgical Neurology found that after seventy-five days on fish oil, 59% of patients who were taking NSAIDs for chronic spinal pain and who had degenerative spine disease were able to discontinue their prescription NSAIDs. Eighty percent stated they were satisfied with their improvement, and 88% stated they would continue to take the fish oil.

Zyflamend. This preparation contains a synergistic blend of 10 specially processed herbs including ginger, rosemary, turmeric, holy basil, green tea, Hu Zhang, Chinese goldthread, barberry, oregano, and skullcap. Laboratory cell studies found it inhibits the COX-2 enzyme that triggers inflammation.

If you're already taking NSAIDs for your pain, "Take Zyflamend at half the recommended dose along with your prescribed medication; after 1 month, cut your NSAID dose in half and increase Zyflamend to full dosage; a month later, drop your NSAID and see if your symptoms are controlled. If your pain returns, you may need to resume taking your NSAID again," recommends natural health expert, Andrew Weil, MD in Prevention magazine.

Proteolytic Enzymes. These enzymes including papain, chymopapaine, bromelain, and pancreatic preparations can "fast forward" the healing process, support the removal of damaged tissue, and reduce swelling, report natural health experts Ross A. Hauser MD and Payson Flattery, NP, DC, in The Cure for Chronic Pain: End the Pain of Arthritis, Sports Injury and Other Joint Problems.

Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). An analysis of the 2002 National Health Interview published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine found that a majority (60 percent) of survey respondents who used CAM therapies for back pain perceived "a great deal" of benefit and they reported improved health status. How To Treat Paracentral Disc Herniation And Get Back To A Normal Life


To understand a paracentral disc herniation, one needs to know a little bit about the structure of a disc. There are two general structures associated with a disc, which includes the nucleus pulposus and the annulus fibrosus. The nucleus pulposus is in the center of the disc, which contains a gelatinous center that acts as a weight-bearing fluid along the vertical axis and acts as a pivot point to allow some movement around the trunk of your body. The annulus fibrosus forms a bag around the nucleus pulposus and is mostly made of multiple concentric layers of collagen (a protein). The annulus fibrosus functions to contain the gel of the nucleus pulposus under a wide range of pressures. Where the disc meets the spinal cord there is a thecal sac. This thecal sac is another form of tough connective tissue that surrounds the spinal cord. If you have a tear in the annulus fibrosus, the nucleus fluids may protrude and put pressure on the thecal sac. This is a common problem and may occur from improper lifting of heavy objects, accidental trauma and aging.

You will need to set up an appointment with your healthcare provider to determine if you have a paracentral herniated disc. Discus your family history and let your doctor know what kind of pain you are experiencing as well as severity. Your doctor will give a physical exam and possibly take X-rays to determine any structural abnormalities that may be present. One of the things doctors look for is to determine what pain you are experiencing. Are you experiencing a nerve pinch? In this case, the annulus fibrosus is torn and the fluid from the nucleus pulposus is causing the annulus to bulge, which in turn presses against nerves of the spinal cord. Common symptoms associated with a pinched nerve include pain, numbness, tingling sensation (needles and pins) or weakness of muscles associated with that nerve bundle. The pain may radiate down your back, legs and buttocks. Quite often the doctor can identify the nerve involved based on what part of your back, leg and buttock that is affected. How does one treat a pinched nerve? Rest and cold compresses work well. Braces are sometimes used for a short time to limit movement around the pinched nerve to prevent further damage and allow for healing. There are a number of pain/anti-inflammatory medications that can be used for example ibuprofen that can reduce swelling and decrease pain. Your healthcare provider may need to prescribe something stronger for serious pain. Physical therapy (exercise) is also necessary for stretching and strengthening muscles to relieve pressure on the pinched nerve. If these therapies do not work for you, surgery may become necessary particularly if you develop loss of bowel or bladder control, as this is a sign of more serious nerve damage. It may be necessary to remove part of a disc to stop the nerve compression. If this is done then you may require a spinal fusion to stabilize the spine. These are unusual situations and in most cases, patients recover from pinched nerves with home therapies without long-term symptoms.

Axial pain is generally not related to a disease state and is the most common type of low back pain. A number of structures can cause axial or mechanical pain and is difficult to identify which structures are responsible. Axial pain gets worse with certain activities such as sitting for long periods of time, exercise (sports) and gets better with rest. This type of disc pain may become worse with the presence of a degenerated disc, joint problems, muscle damage, ligament or tendon damage. Axial pain problems are generally localized and don't radiate down your legs, feet or buttocks. It is generally not necessary to identify the particular structures involved, as this will resolve itself in a short amount of time. Treatment for axial back pain can be done at home. You will want to rest for a few days and make use of cold/hot compresses in alternating fashion. Physical therapy involving strengthening and stretching of the muscles is next when it is comfortable for you to do so. It is a good idea to take an over-the-counter pain reliever/anti-inflammatory as well. If you axial pain continues for more than 6 to 8 weeks, it is a good idea to see your healthcare provider again for additional testing to determine other therapies that will work for you. Generally, axial disc pain goes away within a few weeks with simple home treatment. The ideal situation is to avoid axial pain all together. A healthy lifestyle is paramount. Maintain a healthy weight, exercise (strengthen your back muscles and keep them in balance), eat properly and get plenty of rest.

On June 30, 2010, a research study was published in the Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatism revealing a possible role of the immune system and back pain associated with herniated discs. When the annulus tears/ruptures, the fluid in the center comes in contact with the blood system. This gelatinous fluid of the disc has never been exposed to the immune system (the internal part of the disc contains no blood vessels). Since the white blood cells have not seen this fluid before, they see it as foreign and attack it to get rid of it generating inflammation. This causes a local nerve root and other tissues to become inflamed, damaged and compressed. The molecule that activates the inflammatory reaction has been identified as interleukin-17 (IL-17), which is a chemical messenger molecule produced by a particular white blood cell. This particular subpopulation of white blood cells are known to be involved in autoimmune responses such as asthma and arthritis. If scientists can find a way to block the production of IL-17 by this particular subpopulation of cells, autoimmunity along the spinal column and hence inflammation can be brought to a halt. This should allow the herniated disc to go about normal healing without having to contend with chronic inflammation and pain. This will work for both acute and chronic inflammation and pain.

Depending on the symptoms of a paracentral herniated disc, there are a number of ways to deal with the situation. Most patients respond well to conservative treatments without the requirement of surgery. Make use of chiropractors, physical therapists, rest, hot/cold compresses and home exercise. Make sure to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating properly to maintain a proper weight. Perhaps in the near future researchers will have a drug that will prevent excessive inflammation and pain that will allow for faster healing without discomfort with an IL-17 blocker.

I've Got Arthritis Nothing Can Be Done - Really?


Arthritis is a condition that affects people of all ages but it becomes more common with increasing age. People often say 'Nothing can be done for my back pain, I've got arthritis'. So, if you have arthritis does it really mean you have to just grit your teeth and put up with it?

Arthritis is progressive and can affect any joint in the body. It causes inflammation within the joints, which can cause them to be stiff and painful. There are many types of arthritis with the most common being osteoarthritis, when this is present in the spine it is known as spondylosis. Osteoarthritis is progressive and goes through three typical phases:

Phase one

The shock absorbers (discs) in between each vertebra are full of fluid. As osteoarthritis starts to progress they lose some of this fluid from within the disc. This leads to a loss in disc height, which allows less space for the nerve roots to exit from the spinal cord meaning an injury is more likely. The dehydration of the disc and the loss of disc height also cause the spine to become more unstable.

Phase two

The discs continue to dehydrate. This causes the body to react by trying to stabilise the spine. It does this by trying to fuse the adjoining vertebra together. Little bony protrusions start to appear known as osteophytes. These osteophytes can pinch on the nerves directly or cause less space for the nerve roots to exit from the spinal cord making an injury even more likely.

Phase three

The vertebrae eventually fuse leaving no room for the nerve roots to exit from the spinal cord. The spine is now more stable but it is likely that there is a complete lack of range of motion. The nerves are likely to be irritated or damaged resulting in pain, changes in sensation, and decrease in muscle strength.

So, how do you tell how much arthritis is present in the spine? People always assume they are in the third phase of arthritis. This is rarely the case. As long as you are within the second phase then something can be done. The joints can be kept more mobile, and the inflammation reduced. This can reduce pain levels and can even increase range of motion. Arthritis cannot be cured but it can be easily managed. In order to manage arthritis effectively you can do the following:

  • Go for regular walks. Walking helps free up the joints throughout your body.

  • Stay hydrated. Water makes up 70% of the body and keeping the body hydrated makes things more fluid and mobile.

  • Try not to sit for too long. Sitting for long periods means our body becomes accustomed to those positions. Joints in specific areas tighten and you start to get muscular compensation. Take regular breaks in order to try and prevent this, every 30 minutes is recommended.

  • See a chiropractor. If you wish to stay mobile or want to get rid of pain a chiropractor is your best bet. The chiropractor will assess your whole body and tell you which joints are moving and which ones are not and will help get you back on track.

Osteoporosis is an age-related condition that increases a person's risk of bone fractures and damaged cartilage. Bone fractures are more serious as we age, because of slow healing. Surgical procedures are often required to correct the damage. Surgery is accompanied by complications that can cut short a person's life. • Most Common Osteoporosis Causes

Osteoporosis is by definition a reduction of bone density and flexibility. Other than more fragile bones, the symptoms can include curvature of the spine or a stooped back and other bone deformities. The pain of arthritis may also accompany the condition.

When we say there is a reduction of bone density, what we are actually talking about is a decrease in minerals. Minerals account for the density, thickness and strength of our bones. Ankylosis Spondylitus


Ankylosis Spondylitus, a disease with a long sounding name. It causes inflammation of the joints and is commonly referred to as arthritis of the back. This is a progressive disease that continues without remorse. It encompasses degeneration of the disks in the vertebra of the back. It extends to cause pain in the hips, neck, knees and ankles. A general stiffness of the body is first noticed by the host. Its effects include difficulty in walking, getting in and out of cars and stiffness of the spinal column. The end result of this disease is total fusion of the spine.

The effects of this disease progressively get worse. Over a period of time the ugly face of
complete disability may stare you in the face. Back pain is accompanied by the inability to
walk or move without constant and unbearable pain. Some people cannot actively function in
jobs that they have occupied for many years with the onset of this disease. This disease
can causes job changes or disability.

Although there is no cure for this disease there are things that you can use to slow the
disease down or lessen the pain associated with it. A mix of glucosamine, chondroitin and
MSM will slow down the effects of the disease. Physical therapy will also help to retard it's
effects. Use the same medications that you would normally use for arthritic conditions.

Salves or ointments normally reserved for arthritis treatment can be used in this capacity.
Chiropractors use treatments that help break up the vertebrae in the spinal column with the
hope of returning the spine to good health. If this disease continues unabated without some

Neck Pain, Back Pain and Sciatica - Understanding and Treating Ankylosing Spondylitis


Ankylosing spondylitis is an arthritic condition that affects the spine and is also characterized by sacroiliac joint involvement, peripheral inflammatory arthropathy, and an absence of the rheumatoid factor. Symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis include neck pain, back pain, and sciatic nerve pain. Individuals with this condition experience the destruction of the cartilage and bone resulting in fibrous and bony ankylosing or fusing of the spine, pelvis, ribs, and other joints of the body. Patients with ankylosing spondylitis typically exhibit what is referred to as a stiff or "poker spine." Mobility of the spine usually is decreased symmetrically, meaning on both sides, but does seem to improve with exercise. The pain associated with this condition may range from mild to chronic and acute and has often been referred to as insidious. The pain associated with ankylosing spondylitis is often described as morning stiffness. Ankylosing spondylitis is slightly more prevalent in men and symptoms in men are generally more severe. Native American populations are most affected, although the reasons are unclear. Depending on the severity of the disease, posture may become affected. Ultimately, the condition may result in total disability.

Ankylosing spondylitis is often responsible for significant changes in the spine and the pelvis, particularly the sacroiliac joint, that joint between the pelvis (hips) and the sacrum (tailbone), as mentioned above. In skeletal samples, the vertebrae are often visibly fused over significant portions of the spine from the cervical (neck) to the base of the lumbar region or curvature (low back). The fusions in this condition are often bony with several vertebrae locked into place, thus the name ankylosing spondylitis. Because the spine, and often the sacroiliac joint become fused, mobility is restricted, bending becomes a problem if not impossible, and side to side motion is restricted. It was once believed that an individual diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis was faced with a life without prospects, this no longer needs to be the case. Given the proper treatment strategy individuals may lead a long and productive life.

In addition to ankylosing of the spine, ankylosing spondylitis may cause significant changes, and varying degrees of pain, at other areas of the body, as well. While bony fusions of the vertebrae and sacroiliac joint are the most common, fusions of the ribs to vertebrae and the sternum (breastbone) are not uncommon and may cause difficulties expanding the chest and breathing. Additionally, tendons and ligaments that attach themselves to or come into contact with bone may also become inflamed and painful. Tendonitis may be expressed at any point in the body and is often evident in the Achilles tendon, causing a significant amount of heel pain.

Because ankylosing spondylitis is a systemic disease, symptoms may present themselves anywhere in the body. It is not uncommon for people suffering from ankylosing spondylitis to have elevated sedimentation rates, fevers, fatigue, loss of appetite, eye irritation, and even heart and lung disease. The condition itself may be difficult to diagnose, as the cause is yet unknown and no cure is available. An individual suffering from ankylosing spondylitis, in its worst expression, may endure debilitating neck pain, back pain, and sciatic nerve pain along with stiffness and/or immobility over vast areas of the spine, hips, and even the peripheral joints.

While there is no known cure for ankylosing spondylitis, there are treatments available to alleviate, and in some cases eliminate, the pain and discomfort. Programs have been developed to improve flexibility and function. Ankylosing spondylitis is progressive but it is possible, through exercise and stretching, to improve and even maintain good posture, preventing the stooped-over appearance and deformity, allowing individuals to conduct a relatively normal amount of daily activity and/or activities. And, a daily exercise program, one that includes stretching, deep breathing exercises, and even swimming will help individuals minimize many of the most debilitating consequences of the disease, long term. Inactivity should never be advised or prescribed, as it will only hasten the worst possible consequences of the condition and exacerbate the immobility, neck pain, back pain and sciatica often associated with the condition.

Spine - Laser Spine Surgery in India at Low Cost


A laser spine surgery is a minimally invasive procedure for performing laser surgeries of the spine. With these minimally invasive procedures the blood loss is minimum and the surgical incisions made is also small.

SYMPTOMS OF THE DISEASE

In children, the EA usually begins in the ankle, knee or hip. Some months or years later, other joints may be involved, particularly those of the spine or sacroiliac. The disease behaves differently in each person.

The first symptom may be the enthesitis EAJ, a painful inflammation of tendons and ligaments at the site where they attach to bone, usually near or around the joints. The pain is usually in the joint (as in rheumatoid arthritis) but with a joint. In children, this type of pain occurs most often under or behind the heel below the toes or around the kneecap.

About one fifth of patients develop EAJ eye inflammation called iridocyclitis or uveitis. Can occur in one or both eyes, and usually accompanied by acute eye redness, sensitivity to sunlight and pain. Other complications (which can affect the heart, kidneys or spinal cord) are very rare.

Topical corticosteroids can be used to treat eye inflammation. Surgery usually is not required, but in a few cases of severe joint destruction may necessitate hip replacement.

THE DIAGNOSIS OF EAJ

The diagnosis of the EAJ is made on the basis of clinical history, physical characteristics of joint inflammation and tissue and the results of certain laboratory and radiological examinations. Experienced doctors in the care of children with JAS will make a careful assessment of arthritis; ask carefully about enthesitis and look at the physical examination, spinal mobility tested, sacroiliac pain and chest movement with breathing. There is no specific laboratory test for EAJ, but tests can be very useful. The genetic marker HLA B27 is not an anomaly in itself, but its presence correlates with the development of EAJ in a child with arthritis. Radiographs of the sacroiliac joints, which must show changes to make a clear diagnosis of AD in adults, may be normal in children with JAS, or show those changes over time, when the individual is an adult. Keep in mind that the plates of the sacroiliac joints are usually difficult to interpret in younger kids because bones are growing along the joint.

The EAJ can resemble other diseases, and physicians should be careful to make a proper diagnosis. There are several diseases associated with AD who have other problems besides arthritis. These include: Crohn's Disease, ulcerative colitis (inflammation of the intestines), Reiter syndrome (arthritis with inflammation of the eyes and loose lower urinary tract infection), psoriasis. What is the impact of the pain in your life? How paralyzing is the pain and how does it keep you from living a better life? First it is important to know what type of condition or arthritis you have. Then you can make a plan to control it and more importantly to understand it. The pain is your body's alarm system telling you that something is wrong.

Pain is a call to action. For example if you cut yourself, the nerves in that area will release a signal telling your brain that something is wrong. There are many types of pain just as there are many types of Arthritis and it may vary from day to day.

You will probably try many different types of Pain Relief (Joint ease plus) before you find the one that works properly and makes you feel better. These treatments can be various Natural Products or types of therapy that will help you to feel better and moderate or eliminate your pain.

Consistent pain like that which accompanies arthritis and fibromyalgia is sometimes more difficult to manage, because of the continuous nagging feelings and the thoughts that go with those feelings. This can keep you locked into a condition for a very long time that may not be necessary. Your thoughts and emotions can affect your energy level, your attitude and the way people around you react to your condition.

Your pain travels through a system of nerves in your brain and spinal cord. At various times your body tries to stop these signals by creating "chemicals" that help block pain signals. These chemicals, called endorphins, are morphine-like painkilling substances that decrease the pain sensation. The times this happens can greatly depend on your thoughts. When your concern is greater over something outside of yourself (such as a family emergency,) your awareness of your own pain can diminish. There are many forms of Arthritis, such as gout, rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis, and fibromyalgia. Anyone who lives with, or knows someone who has this debilitating disease knows how painful and life-affecting it can be. They also know how costly it can be to "manage" arthritis with expensive medications, such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), some of which result in terrible side-effects, have known dangerous health risks, such as increased risk for heart attack and stroke, and which decrease in effectiveness over time, if they were even effective to begin with.

Occupational Therapy involves the utilization of key daily life activities to help patients participate in these functions, regardless of their emotional and physical impairment. It is a method of therapy that helps patients achieve independence, even though their physical or mental functions may be limited. Therapeutic techniques help improve cognitive abilities and motor skills in order to improve one's overall well-being and quality of life.

According to Canada's Occupational Therapy Resource Site, otworks.ca, "Occupational therapists consider occupation to be everything people do to occupy themselves, including looking after themselves (self-care), enjoying life (leisure), and contributing to the social and economic fabric of their communities (work/productivity)."

Occupational therapy helps patients with such conditions as physical injuries, head injuries, amputations, mental health and developmental disorders, congenital disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, orthopedic injuries, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and post traumatic stress disorders. An occupational therapist can also help children with such conditions as developmental delays, physical disabilities, and sensory and attention dysfunctions.

According to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, stress is defined as "a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation." One type of stress is job stress. Symptoms of job stress include: job dissatisfaction, sleep disturbances, short temper, stomach ache, headaches, low morale, and more. The consequences of stress in the medical industry can include: reduced patient care, increase in staff turnover, discontented patients, and less time spent with patients.

Occupational Therapy is one career that can be can be stressful. According to Chris Lloyd from the University of Queensland, Australia in his article "Work-related stress and occupational therapy", some causes of stress and burnout are: "the caring nature of their work, repeated exposure to distress, repeated exposure to difficult behavior, prolonged interventions, and uncertain outcomes."

There are many resources to help one reduce stress and prevent job burnout. Many experts recommend avoiding isolating oneself from friends, coworkers, and family, make sure that you do not take on too many problems, take care of your physical health, and maintain a sense of humor.

Occupational therapists are regulated in all 50 States and work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centers, mental health facilities, private practices, children's clinics, and nursing homes.

According to the United States Department of labor, "Employment of occupational therapists is expected to increase 23 percent between 2006 and 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations." A major factor for employment growth is an increasing elderly population and increased need for children's care. There are also an increased number of individuals with disabilities or limited function who require therapy services. An aging baby-boom generation also increases the number of incidents of heart attacks and strokes which can require the services of Occupational Therapists.

Occupational therapy is a highly valued and respected medical career. Occupational therapists help patients overcome obstacles that prevent them from participating in daily life activities. Understanding and identifying the stressors that may be involved with a career in Occupational therapy will play a big part in implementing the best stress management techniques.

What You Need to Know About Fibromyalgia

What is Fibromyalgia?

There are 5 to 6 million known cases of Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) in the United Stares, and many more that have yet to be diagnosed. Fibromyalgia is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed conditions in this country. False diagnosis for FMS is commonly diagnosed as chronic fatigue syndrome, lymes disease, chronic myofascial pain syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and many others. There is no definitive diagnostic test for fibromyalgia that can determine for certain that FMS is the cause of the symptoms. Fibromyalgia is a complex disorder involving several symptoms and is basically a rule-out diagnosis. A rule out diagnosis means that you cannot definitively diagnosis fibromyalgia based on any one test, symptom, or examination. No doctors can definitively diagnosis fibromyalgia without ruling out other causes of the symptoms first. There are many conditions which can mimic and present similar to fibro, and should be ruled out before the diagnosis is definitive. Some of these disorders include autoimmune disorders, tick-borne illness, genetic deficiencies and others. Some common disorders to rule out include lymes disease, lupus, irritable bowl diseases, arthritis, and others. Diagnosis will be discussed in further detail separately in the book.

Many doctors, studies, and institutions have tried to determine the root cause of FMS. FMS affects mostly women and typically the symptoms begin in young adulthood. Several hypotheses have been put forward to try to explain fibromyalgia and include immunologic abnormalities, chemical insensitivity, Epstein Barr Virus infection, Candidia Ablicans infection, chronic mercury poisoning from dental fillings, anemia, parasites, phyopglycmia, and hypothyroidism. However, as with most medical issues, I think that we overcomplicate things. In this book, I will try to describe complex medical terms, hypothesis and treatments in easy to understand language and recommendations.

There are lots of fancy medical words and large concepts that we could use to tell you about fibromyalgia. It would make me sounds smart and like I knew what I was talking about, however, it wouldn't help you all that much. Plus, most of those big words are just Latin that us doctors use to make ourselves sound smart. I would like to explain fibromyalgia to you in simple terms. I think anyone who has been diagnosed with fibro, thinks they may have fibro, or has a friend with fibro, knows that if you got 10 doctors in a room to discuss fibro, four wouldn't believe that fibro exists, and then you would get 10 opinions from the other six doctors. Unfortunately, the etiology (cause) of fibromyalgia is not completely known. However, I believe that it is easily explainable; we just try to over-complicate the issue.

Fibromyalgia is a disorder, which consists of an overly active, overly sensitive nervous system. That is it! I couldn't make it much simpler. Fibromyalgia consists of a body's own nervous system over-reacting. The nervous system is the master controller of the body. The human body can survive approximately 6 weeks with no food, about 6 days without water, about 6 minutes without a heart, and about 6 milliseconds without a nervous system. The nervous system is the master controller of everything your body does. The brain monitors and controls every cell, tissue and organ through the central nervous system, or spinal cord, down to the spinal nerves and then out to the cell, tissues, and organs. The brain sends messages through this control system, and the tissues send messages back, this forms the two-way communication, which is the essence of health and life. This messages lets the brain monitor and record everything that every little cell is doing, and it makes changes, or adjusts, based on the information it receives. This system lets our brain monitor, adjust, and optimize our environment and health.

One way I tell my patients to think of it is to imagine a garden hose coming out of the front of your house. The hose is supplying water to a sprinkler watering the grass. The sprinkler is like the smaller nerves that supply the smaller cells. Now, it is important for the grass to get the right amount of water. Lots of patients in my practice come to see me with a pinched nerve. Now, pinched nerves are like someone standing on the hose. The water doesn't come out as much as it should, and the water doesn't give the grass its nourishment, it wilts, and dies. Pinched nerves are very similar. Now, fibro is the complete opposite of that, Imagine hooking up a fire hose to the sprinkler? Probably would like right huh? Water flying up in the air, all over the place, putting lots of stress on sprinkler head, and probably giving way too much water to the grass. And what will happen if you keep over watering the grass that way? It will also get brown and die. The firehouse to a sprinkler is the best analogy I can give to fibromyalgia. The nervous system is hyper active.

Just as an under active nervous system can make you numb, and over-active nervous system makes you over sensitive to stimuli. We will be talking about diagnosis soon; however, one of the definitive diagnostic tests for fibro is the trigger point assessment. Basically the test discovers if certain points in the body are over-sensitive. This is testing the nervous systems response. If you touch a certain part of your body, in a certain way, your nerves should respond a certain way. In fibro patients, those certain points with a certain pressure, elicit an over reactive and over sensitive response. This demonstrates the body's hyperactive state. The over-active nervous system model can be applies to all signs and symptoms of fibro. Scientifically, this idea has been proven by several studies, which have demonstrated an increased level of substance P, a neurotransmitter in the brain and spinal cord that causes pain. (1,2,3)

This over active nervous system is more responsive to pain than a normal nervous system. Also the increased levels of substance P, tell us that the brain and spinal cord are inducing more pain. My neurology instructor in graduate school told our class that if our brain acknowledged all the pain our nerves felt all day, we would go insane. In fact, it has been shown in studies that 99 percent of all pain signals recorded by the nerves are ignored at the brain. The brain is normally trying to protect us from all the pain that we feel. The nerves do a great job at monitoring all that goes on in the body, especially pain signals. However, it's the brains and spinal cords job, to edit these signals. To decide which are important and which are not. Unfortunately, with FMS these edits don't seem to be working, and the patient feels much more than is normally tolerable.

This excess reaction is a root cause for all FMS symptoms. Of course there are other hypothesis for the cause of fibromyalgia. Some doctors have suggested that fibro is due to chronic of previous infection, some claim sleep disturbances can cause it, and some even believe that there is a genetic component. More studies will be done, however most are in the general agreement that the nervous system is key, and that it is overreacting. The final details will come, but that makes the most sense to me, and I see FMS every day. Several studies have come to similar conclusions as this to the root of FMS. However, this is my opinion based on years of clinical experience and the research that has been performed. Unfortunately like many aspects of FMS, there is no definitive widely believed root cause of FMS, however, most opinions and research studies have shown an over-active nervous system as the cause of fibro.
