Before a practitioner can subject any patient to any form of spinal traction, or any form of therapy for that matter, he has to carefully and thoroughly examine the patient first. Although traction has been seen as an effective treatment for back pain and degenerative diseases, not everybody is suitable to it. For starters, not everybody can endure the weight of physical force. For instance, pregnant women certainly should not subject themselves to any kind of forceful treatment, and so with others who are suffering from cardiovascular disease, hernia, and TMJ (temporomandibular joint disease). According to the American Chiropractic Association, all available evidence demonstrates that chiropractic treatment holds an extremely small risk. The chiropractic profession takes this issue very seriously and engages in training and postgraduate education courses to recognize the risk factors in patients, and to continue rendering treatment in the most effective and responsible manner.

The National College of Chiropractic Clinic reported that over a 15 year period over 5 million neck adjustments were given without a single vascular injury.

There are tons of biased information floating around the internet about the risk of spinal manipulation, but most of the time they provide little or no scientific evidence.

Considering the general public lack of information supporting chiropractic treatment, many people are still taking a large amount of NSAIDS that cause a lot of internal damage and is also associated with a large number of hospitalizations and deaths. However, there is not a large effort to minimize the overuse of NSAIDS. In 1998, Dr. Singh of the Stanford University of Medicine reviewed the thousands of medical records of arthritis patients at 8 participating institutions. He concluded that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID are anti-inflammatory drugs that include Aspirin, Naproxen ("Aleve"), Ibuprofen ("Advil" and "Motrin")-related gastrointestinal (GI) complications (internal bleeding) and at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone. The figures for all NSAID users would be overwhelming, yet the scope of this problem is generally un-reported and the public remains at significant risk. If we calculate the costs (direct and indirect) associated with NSAIDs the cost is in the billions.

I have seen this problem when I worked in the hospital in the Intensive Care Unit. A significant amount of patients were taking Tylenol or Motrin for chronic musculoskeletal pain, commonly the neck and back. These patients were generally admitted for gastrointestinal bleeding which resulted in Anemia. When a person is anemic there is insufficient amount of blood circulating, resulting in lack of tissue perfusion and decreased oxygenation. If this condition persists, then the tissues will die leading to organ failure. Many anemic patients develop strokes and/or myocardical infarctions.

Considering the evidence that supports the risk involved with chiropractic as opposed to over-medicating with NSAIDs, chiropractic care must become the standard of care for spinal conditions. The end results would be decreased incidences of NSAID-related disorders and decreased costs.

Cervical Nerve Root Impingement Treatment


Cervical nerve root impingement or bulging is caused by influx of substances from damaged inter-vertebral discs into the tunnel of the spinal column causing irritation to the nerves in that area and pain in associated portions of the body.

The treatment of these conditions consists mostly in trying to remove those bulges by exerting the right kind of pressure on the right places of the spine. By squeezing the portion of the spine where protruding extraneous substances are causing distress to the nerves, those substances are flushed out of the spine canal.

Usually, nerve root impingements are temporary conditions which can be treated by proper exercise and correcting the posture of the patients. For the neck these exercises will involve nodding movements which bring in the chin towards the neck. With the neck firm, the chin is then brought slowly towards the neck. Bring the chin back to the original position and repeat.

The second type of the nodding exercise should be done with the torso or body bent forward at an angle of 45 degreed to the horizontal. The basic movement of keeping the neck in position while drawing in the chin is repeated.

Another way to exercise the neck is to bring in one ear towards the side of the neck while keeping the base of the neck upright. Hold for about 5 seconds and bring the head back to normal position. Repeat for the other ear.

When buying any supplement, you have to make sure that it is of good quality. One way to ensure this is to buy products that adhere to Good Manufacturing Protocols. The box should have GMP stamped on it. The product could be inferior even if the label states that it is "laboratory tested". This could only refer to the raw material, which is really inconclusive, and many things can happen in the process of making a supplement. This reduces cost and brings more profit for the manufacturer, but hurts the consumer by providing them with an ineffective product.

Avoid topical forms. Glucosamine and Chondroitin are completely useless if applied topically.

Be cautious if something claims to be better than Glucosamine and Chondroitin, with the exception of ASU, there is nothing to support this claim scientifically.

Avoid store brands. The FDA does not strictly regulate dietary supplements. There is no such thing as a "generic" supplement - there are only good or poor supplements. You are probably not getting the active ingredients you need in a store brand.
